I met a man by the name of SAM SPIKES, who was living in Lake Kiowa (Gainesville) Texas. we talked about where the "colored" Spikes' came from. As, I had attended school along side an african American "Spikes". He said he had detailed information about his family who were very wealthy plantation owners from Lower Alabama. They owned several slaves before the free world. Back then the slaves did not have last names. So, when the free world came about and they begin to buy land, They took on their Master's Last name. I have tried to write to Sam Spikes and his family, but have had no response. I do believe that Sam has since died (in the last three years), but I am sure his writings still exsist. I do know he had spend most of his retired life "digging up dirt" on the Spikes name and legacy.... |

| Comments: | Regarding the previous message, the information that I have is this. James Spikes' mother's name was Victor Victoria Georgia Ann Spikes. Her children were James, Michael, Robert, Plushi, Anita, and Margaret. James Spikes died about 5 years ago, his mother died sometime in the 80's. He had hazel eyes, a light complexion, and a full beard. His mother had a light complexion, hair that was coal black, wavy, and flowed down her back to her waist. We didn't know much else about my dad's parents or grandparents except that they were also from the South. Thank you for your research and I hope to learn more about my lineage through this. |

Two things you might be able to work with...I visited Speightstown in Barbados. The Speight name got there from England in Barbados's earliest days. Also, one of the respondee mentioned the name Viola. My mother's name was Viola Lucille Jerrel; she was the daughter of Sarah Louisa Spikes Jerrel, sister of Jessie Spikes. They had a sister named Viola, who died in a typhoid epidemic. I believe Ann Kavanagh has that information. Anyway, the name Viola is probably a family name. He left my great-grandma Grace Yarborough after she gave birth to their only child, Russell Henry Jr. Like you, we have no idea what happened to Russell Sr. However, Russell Jr. married June Marie but he died on a submarine, the USS KETE, during WWII before seeing his only son CLAYTON HENRY SPIKES born in 1944. If I read your tree correctly, I would fall in the 8's with my three brothers and one sister. We are also related to the Spikes' Gang ( Made for TV movie from 70's about horse thiefs in Texas). We are from Galveston, my parents hailing from Keene and Terrell. My Grandmother Dash (who is now dead and as far as I know was the last remaining Daughter of the Civil War), always told me that the Spikes family traced all the way back to Sir Francis Drake. |
